Cossington Concerts depends on the enthusiasm and support of its audiences. From the very beginning, we have sought to make high-level classical music accessible and enjoyable. The members of the Cossington Concert Circle and Wider Circle make up our most loyal audience, in part because of the opportunities to become familiar with the artists and the concert repertoire that Circle meetings provide. Other forms of nourishment are also a feature of Cossington Concert events, especially of Musicales, where a top local chef is invited to provide a meal as part of a musical evening.

Musicales

In 2007 the Trust offered two Musicales, intended as evenings of music and fine dining.  The first, featuring a recital by the baroque cellist Tatty Theo and harpsichordist Carolyn Gibley, took place in March at Shapwick House.  The second, a recital by two Russian musicians from the Hermitage Percussion Ensemble followed by a dinner prepared by chef Mike McKenzie, took place in the Manor Gardens. In 2008 a third Musicale featuring The Absolution Saxophone Quartet, from the Royal Northern College of Music, and a gourmet char-grilled supper prepared by Mike McKenzie took place in the garden of Tower House, Chilton Polden.  This past season our Evening of Cabaret Music, featuring the mezzo soprano Katie Bray and pianist William Vann, took place at Hill House, Shapwick and was followed by a supper prepared by chef Kate Hunt.

Manor Music Room Recitals

In 2008 Cossington Concerts launched a new series of Manor Music Room Recitals as a way to promote emerging young artists with local connections. The first, a song recital entitled ‘Romantic Journey’, was given by the soprano Elizabeth Parsons and the pianist Florian Markel. In 2009, the young violinist Tansy Bennett (a Fund for Young Musicians recipient) and pianist Kodo Osada, both of Wells Cathedral School, gave a short recital at the October Circle meeting.

Since the establishment of the Fund for Young Musicians, it has become a tradition for some of the year’s award winners to perform at the Cossington Concert Circle Christmas Party in the Manor Music Room. It is also the venue for the annual Nancy Carr Prize Winner’s Recital. The connection with younger musicians has been further enhanced by Nancy Carr Gift and Prize events in prospect this season:
