Friday 18 June 2010 Concert Circle

Cossington Concerts extends a warm welcome to anyone who would like to attend individual Circle meetings.  They take place at The Manor on the Friday evening before each of our concerts at 7.30. Admission is £5 and includes wine and canapés.

On Friday 18 June, John Steane, the music critic and distinguished authority on singing, will speak on 'The Obscene Voice'. Rinaldo Hahn ascribed to Clara Butt 'une voix obscène'. She was the most famous and extreme of a generation which claimed as many 'contraltos' as today there are 'mezzo-sopranos'.  What has happened?  John Steane outlines the history of the lower female voices and discusses with recorded illustrations the art of some notable contraltos.

Gwilym Simcock Trio Jazz Masterclass

3pm, Sunday 28 February 2010 - Queen's College, Taunton

Student jazz groups from Taunton colleges Queen's and Richard Huish, and young pianist-composer Matt Pringle from Wells are to take part in a masterclass with the British jazz phenomenon Gwilym Simcock in the Queen's Hall (Queen's College, Taunton) on Sunday, 28 February, 3-5 pm.   The masterclass is open to the public and, thanks to sponsorship from the Sidney Lawton Trust, is free of charge. The group from Richard Huish College comprises four students playing trumpet, piano, bass guitar and drums, whilst the Queen’s College quartet is made up of student musicians on alto saxophone, piano, bass and drums.

The focus of the masterclass will be on jazz improvisation, providing fascinating insights for spectators as well as the participants. At only 29, Gwilym is an inspirational role model for aspiring young musicians and this is an opportunity not to be missed.

The Gwilym Simcock Trio which features Gwilym on piano, Yuri Goloubev on double bass and drummer James Maddren, will perform in the Queen's Hall at 7.30 pm.  Tickets, which are selling fast, can be purchased from Taunton Tourist Information Centre on 01823 336344 or Marian Curry at the Cossington Concerts Ticket Office on 01278 683777 or mariancurry@cossingtonconcerts.com. Ticket prices are £16 for adults and £8 for children/students. Group discounts are available: adults buy 5 tickets get 1 free / school groups buy 10 tickets get 2 free.
